Position Summary
The Senior Research Associate will join the Terner Center’s research team to advance the use of innovative construction methods to improve housing delivery. This senior-level role will lead research design, build partnerships, develop conceptual and policy frameworks, and secure project funding.
The Senior Research Associate reports to the Associate Research Director of Land Use and Supply and will collaborate with senior staff at both the Terner Center and Terner Labs. The position will also represent the Center through public speaking, media engagement, and participation in research collaboratives.

 
Responsibilities
• 25% Research & Oversight – Lead major projects, supervise staff and students, and ensure accuracy of research outputs.
• 15% Communications – Translate findings into reports, briefs, blogs, and webinars in collaboration with communications staff.
• 15% Partnerships & Fundraising – Cultivate industry, policy, and philanthropic relationships; develop funding strategies.
• 15% Proposal Development – Draft research proposals with input from senior staff.
• 10% Supervision – Recruit, train, and manage research analysts and graduate students.
• 5% Technical Support – Provide expertise in data management and analysis.
• 5% Policy Monitoring – Track legislation, research, and government activity.
• 5% Representation – Present findings at conferences and public forums.

 
Required Qualifications
• Strong organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills.
• Research or industry background in housing and construction.
• Knowledge of industrialized/off-site/prefabricated methods and building codes.
• Experience translating technical research for non-academic audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to build cross-sector collaborations.
• Experience managing complex research or academic programs.
• Fundraising and proposal development experience.
• Strong negotiation and influencing skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Proficiency in qualitative research methods (interviews, case studies, literature reviews).
• Commitment to equity and sustainability in housing research.
• At least 5 years’ experience in architecture, engineering, construction, housing development, or policy-related research.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent training/experience.

 
Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in construction, engineering, building science, public policy/administration, or real estate.

 
Salary & Benefits
• Range: $112,400 – $163,200 (budgeted range; final offer based on experience, education, and internal equity).
