Accounting Manager / Controller Responsibilities

Mary Erickson Community Housing (MECH), a 501(c)3 non-profit affordable housing development organization is dedicated to promoting the well-being of working families by preserving and increasing the supply of affordable housing in Southern California since 1991.  MECH is seeking a self-directed and experienced controller to oversee financial and accounting operations. This includes, budgets, corporate accounting, internal control policies, compliance, reporting and coordination with external auditors for the annual audit.  The controller position serves on a part-time independent contractor basis.  Join us in providing homes for limited income working families in our communities!

 

Base Requirements: 10 hours per month plus additional below

  • Review monthly prop. mgmt. financial reports -
  • Reconcile bookkeeper’s G/L inputs
    • Cash Receipt/Disbursements
    • Monthly prop. mgmt. financial reports
  • Input directly other significant transactions -
    • Property Purchases
    • Property Sales
  • Prepare quarterly financial statement package for executive director & board of directors
  • Attend quarterly board meetings (three virtually and one in person meeting in February each year) on the second Tuesday of the second month of each quarter for approximately two (2) hours.
  • Bi-Weekly team calls, 30 minutes

Additional Responsibilities: Approx. 120 hours per year.

  • Annual Financial Statement Audit & tax returns
  • Prepare G/L for year-end financial audit and tax return
  • Reconcile and prepare support for all year-end balances & totals
  • Work with external auditors, providing them w/ copies of requested documents and transactions
  • Review & approve proposed J/Es
  • Review & approve final audited financial statement and tax return
  • Track financial statement reporting and loan payment as set forth in various loan and regulatory agreements.                                    
  • Assist Exec. Dir. w/ other tasks & responsibilities as requested

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience. Preference will be given to candidates with affordable housing and/or non-profit experience. Familiarity with Federal (HUD) and other public funding is preferable.
  • Ability to thrive in a small corporate and entrepreneurial environment
  • Strong people, administrative and financial management skills
  • Flexibility and ability to function effectively under pressure conditions
  • Excellent computer skills including expertise with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office.

Location

  • Dana Point and Lake Forest for 1x annual meeting, otherwise can work remotely.
